Summer in the Gulf is not a season that invites outdoor life. From May onwards, the heat builds steadily. By July and August, daytime temperatures across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Kuwait regularly exceed 40°C. Humidity along the coast pushes the perceived temperature higher still. Overnight temperatures in Dubai rarely drop below 30°C. In Kuwait, summer peaks above 50°C have been recorded. In the interior of Saudi Arabia, sustained periods above 45°C through the height of summer are common.
Outdoor exercise becomes impossible, dining outside is uncomfortable, time spent in natural spaces – parks, beaches, open air – shrinks to the early morning hours and disappears entirely through the middle of the day. For several months of the year, life is moved almost entirely indoors.
