The Best Outdoor Activities in Marbella and the Costa del Sol

By 24 June 2026No Comments

Marbella’s reputation for luxury, fine dining and beautiful coastline is well established. What is sometimes overlooked, howevr, is how much the region offers for those who want to be active during their time here.

The Costa del Sol’s winning combination of mild climate, landscape and infrastructure makes it one of the most versatile outdoor destinations in Europe. More than 300 days of sunshine per year, mild winters, a dramatic mountain backdrop and a long Mediterranean coastline create conditions for an unusually broad range of activities, many of which are available year-round.

This guide covers the best outdoor activities in Marbella and the wider Costa del Sol, from the most established pursuits to those that have grown significantly in popularity in recent years.

Golf

Golf is the activity most closely associated with the Costa del Sol, and for good reason. The region is home to over 70 courses within easy reach of Marbella, which is why it is often referred to as the Costa del Golf. The concentration of high-quality layouts, combined with near year-round playability, has made it one of the leading golf destinations in Europe.

Golf Courses to visit:

Villa Padierna Golf Club: The closest course to The Sanctuary and one of the most complete golf destinations on the entire coast. Villa Padierna is home to three 18-hole courses: Flamingos, Alferini and Tramores, covering 54 holes in total. The club has hosted both the European Senior Tour and the Ladies European Tour, and the facilities, including a 17-bay driving range and extensive short-game area, are among the finest in the region.

Los Naranjos: Also in the Golf Valley, this Robert Trent Jones Sr. design is known for its generous fairways, strategic bunkering and the avenue of orange trees that give the course its name. Considered one of the finest members’ clubs in the area.

La Quinta Golf & Country Club: Set in the hills of Benahavís with panoramic views across the Costa del Sol. The course offers three nine-hole loops that can be combined in different configurations, and the facilities are among the best in the region.

Marbella Club Golf Resort: A more secluded, scenic option set in the hills above Benahavís. Known for its views and the quality of the overall club experience.

The Golf Valley of Nueva Andalucía, a short drive from central Marbella, concentrates several top courses within a very small area and is the natural base for serious golfers visiting Marbella.

Hiking

The hills surrounding Marbella’s coastline is one of the most underappreciated aspects of the area. The Sierra Blanca, Sierra de las Nieves and the mountains around Ojén and Istán provide a dramatic and largely unspoiled backdrop for hiking, with trails ranging from accessible coastal walks to serious mountain ascents.

Hiking routes worth considering:

La Concha: The mountain that defines Marbella’s skyline and the area’s most iconic hike. The trail departs from the Refugio de Juanar and ascends to the summit at 1,215 metres above sea level, covering approximately 12 to 14 kilometres round trip. From the top, the views extend across the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and, on clear days, the coast of North Africa.

Cruz de Juanar: A shorter and more accessible variant of the Sierra Blanca trails, departing from Marbella and ascending via the Puerto de Marbella pass. A good introduction to the mountain landscape behind the coast.

Benahavís River Walk: A short drive from the village of Benahavís, this walk follows the Río Guadalmina through the Cañón de las Angosturas, where the route weaves between gentle wooden walkways and stretches where you wade or swim through the river itself. The full route takes around three hours and suits most ages and fitness levels, with guided tours available for those wanting to take on the more adventurous sections.

Sierra de las Nieves: Designated a National Park in 2021 and located around 30 minutes inland from Marbella, the Sierra de las Nieves offers a network of trails through pine and oak forests, with excellent biodiversity and significantly fewer visitors than the coastal routes.

The best months for hiking in the area are September through May. Summer hiking is possible, but requires an early start, as well as plenty of water and suncream.

Mountain Biking and Cycling

The Costa del Sol’s cycling infrastructure has developed considerably over the past decade, and the region now attracts riders from across Europe, particularly during the winter months when northern European conditions make training difficult.

The mountains behind Marbella offer challenging terrain for mountain biking, with trails of varying difficulty accessible from Benahavís, Ojén and the villages of the Serranía de Ronda. Several specialist operators run guided mountain bike tours from Marbella, providing bikes, guides and transfers to trail heads.

For road cyclists, the coastal routes and the mountain passes into the interior, particularly the climb to Ronda via the Serranía, offer some incredible options. The region’s relatively quiet roads and mild winter climate make it a popular base for cycling training camps.

Padel

Padel has been part of Spanish sporting culture since the 1970s, when the game was first introduced to the country, and it has been deeply embedded in everyday life here ever since. What has changed in recent years is its rapid spread beyond Spain. The sport has grown internationally at a pace that has brought fresh attention to the Costa del Sol as one of its spiritual homes. The region has one of the most active padel communities in the country, with courts at almost every sports club, residential complex and hotel in the area.

Marbella regularly hosts World Padel Tour events, and the quality of facilities in the area reflects the sport’s seriousness here.

Real Club Padel Marbella: One of the flagship padel clubs on the coast, with ten panoramic courts, a pro shop, fitness centre and restaurant. The club hosts international tournaments and offers coaching from experienced professionals. Visitor passes are available for those in the area on holiday.

Most of the sports clubs and hotels in Marbella offer padel courts, and booking a court at short notice is generally straightforward outside of peak hours, usually using apps like Playtomic.

Watersports

The Mediterranean coastline provides a natural setting for a wide range of water-based activities, from calm-water paddling to higher-adrenaline pursuits. The sea temperature around Marbella is comfortable for swimming and water activities from May through October.

Paddleboarding and kayaking: The sheltered bays along the Costa del Sol are well suited to paddleboarding and sea kayaking. Both can be hired independently from beach operators or combined with guided coastal tours.

Sailing and boat charters: Puerto Banús is one of the most active marinas on the Mediterranean coast and serves as the base for a significant sailing and charter fleet. Day sails, skippered charters and sailing lessons are all available. The coastline between Marbella and Gibraltar is particularly scenic and includes several natural anchorages.

Scuba diving: The seabed off the Costa del Sol supports a variety of marine life, and visibility in the Mediterranean is generally good outside of the summer months. Several dive centres in Marbella offer introductory dives, PADI courses and guided dive trips for qualified divers.

Jet skiing and parasailing: Available directly from the main beaches during the summer season, with operators concentrated around the Puerto Banús and Marbella beach areas.

Deep sea fishing: Charter fishing boats operate from Puerto Banús year-round, offering half-day and full-day trips for species including tuna, swordfish, dorado and amberjack. The Strait of Gibraltar is particularly productive during the autumn months.

Horse Riding

Andalucía has one of the deepest equestrian traditions in Europe, and the landscape around Marbella is well suited to riding. Several stables in the area offer trail rides through the hills behind the coast, along beach routes and through the natural parks of the interior. There are lots of options for complete beginners, as well as experienced riders looking for longer excursions.

Tennis

The Costa del Sol has historically been one of Europe’s premier tennis destinations. The Puente Romano Tennis Club in Marbella, which has hosted the Marbella Senior Masters with former world number ones including Björn Borg and John McEnroe, is one of the finest tennis facilities in Spain, with a clay court academy and year-round coaching. Most large residential complexes and hotels in the area also offer tennis courts.

When to Come

The Costa del Sol’s outdoor calendar is effectively year-round. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for hiking, cycling and golf, warm enough to be pleasant, cool enough for sustained physical activity. Summer is ideal for watersports and beach-based pursuits. Winter is mild and largely dry, making the region a popular base for training camps and active holidays when northern Europe is closed down.

A Base for Active Travel on the Costa del Sol

For groups looking to build a stay around outdoor activity, The Sanctuary Marbella offers a private villa in the hills of Villa Padierna, Benahavís, positioned directly between the mountain landscape and the coast, ten minutes from Marbella and twenty minutes from Puerto Banús.

The villa’s on-site facilities include a professional Technogym fitness suite, rooftop spinning studio, yoga studio, spa and treatment rooms, and private pools. Personal trainers, cycling guides, hiking itineraries and a full range of activity bookings can be arranged through the concierge team for the duration of any stay.

For groups who want to combine world-class outdoor activity with a genuinely private base, it is difficult to find a better-positioned property on the coast. Get in touch with our bookings team to find out more.
