The Costa del Sol has long been one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations. For many visitors, it means beaches, sunshine and a relaxed pace of life. What is less widely known is that the Málaga province now holds ten Michelin stars – a record for the region – and that the restaurants within reach of Marbella represent some of the most ambitious fine dining in Spain.

This guide covers every Michelin-starred restaurant on the Costa del Sol for 2026, with practical information on what to expect and what makes each one worth the visit.

Why the Costa del Sol Has Become a Serious Food Destination

The transformation of Marbella’s food scene over the past decade has been significant. The area was once better known for beach clubs and international cuisine than for serious gastronomy. That has changed.

A combination of talented local chefs, access to exceptional regional produce, particularly fish and seafood from the Andalusian coast, and the growing demand from high-net-worth visitors has driven investment in fine dining across the region. The 2026 Michelin Guide Spain recognised this with a record haul for the province of Málaga, confirming the Costa del Sol’s place alongside Madrid, Barcelona and San Sebastián as one of Spain’s leading culinary regions.

The Michelin-Starred Restaurants of the Costa del Sol

Skina: Two Michelin Stars

Marbella

Skina is the most decorated restaurant on the Costa del Sol and one of the most celebrated in the whole of Spain. Founded by sommelier Marcos Granda and led in the kitchen by chef Mario Cachinero, it has held two Michelin stars since 2019.

The restaurant is intimate and sits just off the main boulevard in Marbella. The cooking is grounded in Andalusian produce and tradition, approached through precise, modern technique. There is no performance or spectacle to be found at Skina, just exceptional ingredients treated with complete confidence.

The wine list runs to nearly 3,000 references and is considered one of the finest in southern Spain. Three menu formats are available: an à la carte option, a seasonal tasting menu, and a grand tasting menu with full wine pairings.

Skina is the kind of restaurant that justifies planning a trip around. Reservations should be made well in advance, particularly during the peak season, between May and October.

Nintai: One Michelin Star

Marbella

Nintai is unlike anything else on the Costa del Sol. Created by Marcos Granda, the same sommelier behind Skina, it’s a Japanese omakase restaurant that seats just twelve guests around a wooden bar.

There is no fixed menu. The itamae (sushi master) works with whatever premium seasonal ingredients are considered finest that day, preparing a multi-course experience that changes entirely from one sitting to the next. The atmosphere is calm and almost silent, in keeping with the traditions of high-end Japanese dining.

Nintai earned its Michelin star in 2022 and has held it since. For visitors with a serious interest in Japanese cuisine, it is one of the best restaurants of its kind anywhere in Europe. Booking can require significant lead time – a waiting list is often in operation for peak dates.

Messina: One Michelin Star

Marbella

Messina has been part of Marbella’s dining scene since 2003 and has held its Michelin star for over a decade. Chef Mauricio Giovanini leads a kitchen focused on Mediterranean fish and seafood, drawing particularly on the coastal produce of Andalucía.

The style is polished and technically accomplished, the kind of restaurant that delivers a thoroughly satisfying fine dining experience without pushing towards the experimental. It’s an excellent choice for guests who want a reliable, high-quality evening in a setting that feels settled and confident rather than restless.

Back: One Michelin Star

Marbella

Back is the most contemporary of Marbella’s Michelin-starred restaurants. Chef David Olivas brings a bold creative energy to a menu that takes traditional Andalusian ingredients and approaches them from unexpected angles.

The atmosphere is slightly more relaxed than Skina or Messina, without any compromise in the quality of the cooking. Back is a strong option for diners who want ambition and creativity alongside their meal, and a setting that feels alive rather than reverential.

Sollo: One Michelin Star & Michelin Green Star

Fuengirola

Sollo is one of the most distinctive restaurants in Spain, let alone on the Costa del Sol. Chef Diego Gallegos, widely known as the Caviar Chef, has built an entire culinary philosophy around freshwater fish and sustainable aquaponics. Around ninety percent of the restaurant’s ingredients are produced on site through a dedicated R&D laboratory that raises fish and grows vegetables in a fully symbiotic environment.

The result is a tasting menu that feels completely unlike any other in the region – inventive, personal and rooted in a genuine commitment to how food is grown and sourced. Sollo holds both a Michelin star and a Michelin Green Star, the latter awarded specifically to restaurants demonstrating outstanding environmental practices.

Located at the Reserva del Higuerón resort, close to Fuengirola and Benalmádena, Sollo is around thirty minutes from Marbella by car – a straightforward journey that is well worth making for the experience.

Practical Information

When to book: All five restaurants require advance reservations. During summer, Skina and Nintai in particular can be fully booked weeks ahead. If fine dining is a priority during your trip, it is worth securing reservations before you travel.

What to expect: Most of these restaurants are structured around tasting menus lasting two to three hours. Plan the evening around the meal rather than fitting the meal into the evening.

Dietary requirements: Every restaurant will accommodate dietary requirements with sufficient advance notice. Communicate these at the time of booking.

Dress code: Smart dress is expected at all five restaurants. None enforce a strict formal code, but the level of the cooking warrants the effort.

Getting there: Marbella’s starred restaurants are concentrated in the town centre and the Golden Mile area. Sollo in Fuengirola is the only restaurant that requires a short drive along the coast. Private transfers can be arranged from most hotels and villas in the area.

Beyond the Stars

The Michelin-starred restaurants represent the top of a wider fine dining ecosystem that has developed across the Costa del Sol. The area also has a strong selection of Bib Gourmand listings – Michelin’s recognition for excellent food at more accessible prices – alongside a growing number of independent restaurants producing serious, ingredient-led cooking without the formality of a full tasting menu.

For visitors spending a week or more in the area, it is entirely possible to eat exceptionally well every evening without repeating a style or cuisine.

Planning a Stay in Marbella

A great meal is only part of the experience. Where you stay determines the rest of it.

The Sanctuary Marbella is a private luxury villa set in the hills close to Villa Padierna, Benahavís – one of the most secluded and prestigious residential addresses on the Costa del Sol. The property sits ten minutes from Marbella and twenty minutes from Puerto Banús, putting every restaurant in this guide within easy reach by car.

The property is available for holiday rentals, large groups, corporate retreats, wellness stays and private events. If you are planning a trip to the Costa del Sol – built around the food, the weather, the outdoor life, or simply the pleasure of being somewhere exceptional – we would be glad to hear from you.

Both destinations have a well-established reputation for luxury travel. Both offer warm weather, high-end dining and a strong culture of group celebration. For many people planning a luxury group holiday in Spain, the choice often comes down to these two.

But they are very different places, and the right choice depends entirely on what the group actually wants from the experience.

This guide breaks down the key differences to help you decide.

The basics

Ibiza is a Balearic island off the east coast of Spain. It built its global reputation on nightlife and music, and while that identity has evolved, it remains central to the island’s appeal. The luxury market in Ibiza has grown significantly over the past decade, but the party culture is still dominant.

Marbella sits on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain. It has attracted high-net-worth visitors from across Europe and the Middle East, with a focus on privacy, warm weather, golf, and high-quality dining. In recent years, it has also developed a serious wellness and fitness offering that sets it apart from most other Mediterranean destinations.

Both destinations are accessible from major European airports, though Marbella benefits from year-round mild weather in a way that Ibiza, with its more defined seasonal calendar, does not.

Climate and seasonality

This is one of the most significant practical differences between the two destinations.

Ibiza is a seasonal destination. The island comes alive between May and October. Outside of these months, many venues, restaurants and services close entirely. A luxury group holiday in Ibiza tends to be restricted to summer, when demand is at its highest and prices reflect that.

Marbella operates on a much longer calendar. With over 300 days of sunshine per year and mild winters, the Costa del Sol is genuinely viable year-round. Spring and autumn in particular offer excellent conditions – warm days, quieter surroundings and more availability.

For groups with flexibility on timing, Marbella offers considerably more options.

Privacy and exclusivity

Both destinations offer private villa rentals, but the nature of that privacy differs.

In Ibiza, high-season demand means that even private villas are surrounded by a busy, active environment. The island is relatively small and densely visited in summer. True seclusion can be harder to achieve, and the social scene tends to pull groups outward rather than encouraging time at the property.

Marbella, and in particular the residential areas surrounding it , offer a different kind of privacy. The landscape can be more expansive, the residential areas more secluded, and the culture less oriented around public socialising.

Nightlife and social scene

It goes without saying that this is the area where Ibiza has the real advantage.

If the aim of the group holiday is access to world-class clubs, headline DJs and a concentrated nightlife scene, Ibiza remains the benchmark. No other European destination competes at that level.

However, Marbella has its own social scene – Puerto Banús, beach clubs, high-end restaurants and bars – but it is more relaxed in nature. The focus is on dining, socialising at the villa, and enjoying the surroundings rather than late nights and large-scale events.

Wellness, fitness and active travel

This is an area where Marbella has developed a genuine advantage.

Over the past decade, the Costa del Sol has built a strong infrastructure around health and performance. High-quality gyms, boutique fitness studios, padel courts, hiking trails, cycling routes, physiotherapy clinics and nutrition-focused dining are all well established in the area.

Private villa rentals in Marbella increasingly reflect this. Properties with professional fitness facilities, yoga spaces and recovery options allow groups to build active, structured stays that combine training, rest and social time.

Ibiza has a wellness offering, but it remains secondary to the island’s identity. For groups where fitness, recovery or a health-focused programme is important, Marbella is the stronger choice.

Which should you choose?

Choose Ibiza if: Nightlife and the island’s social scene are central to what the group wants. It remains one of the best places in Europe for that specific experience.

Choose Marbella if: The group wants privacy, flexibility, year-round availability, a strong wellness or fitness element, or a more varied experience that balances activity, rest and socialising. Marbella suits groups who want the holiday centred on the villa rather than what’s happening beyond it.

For groups considering a private villa rental with exclusive facilities, structured activities and genuine seclusion, Marbella is consistently the stronger option.

Staying at The Sanctuary Marbella

The Sanctuary is a private luxury villa located within Villa Padierna, Benahavís – just ten minutes from the Costa del Sol beaches and twenty minutes from Puerto Banús.

The villa is available for exclusive private hire for group holidays, corporate retreats and special events. Facilities include professional fitness suites, a rooftop spinning studio, a yoga studio, spa facilities and expansive outdoor spaces.

Our concierge team can arrange private chefs, personal trainers, recovery treatments, outdoor activities and anything else the group requires.

The Ultimate Guide to Experiencing Granada Beyond the Alhambra

When you think of Granada, the Alhambra is likely the first thing that comes to mind. This stunning palace-fortress complex is one of Spain’s most iconic landmarks. However, Granada is so much more than just its most famous site. From historic neighbourhoods and hidden gems to gastronomic delights and stunning views, this city offers a luxurious and adventurous experience for those who seek to explore its lesser-known treasures. Here’s our curated guide for guests of The Sanctuary Marbella, on the top things to see and do in Granada beyond the Alhambra.

  1. Wander Through the Albayzin

Step back in time as you explore the Albayzin, Granada’s oldest neighbourhood. This historic Moorish quarter, with its narrow, cobblestone streets, is full of charm and history. Meander through the white-washed alleyways, discover small squares and enjoy tapas at hidden gems while taking in views of the Alhambra from across the city.

  • To elevate your experience, sip champagne at El Huerto de Juan Ranas while enjoying panoramic views of the Alhambra.
  1. Visit Palacio Dar al-Horra

Nestled deep within the Albayzin, the Palacio Dar al-Horra is a hidden gem that often goes unnoticed by tourists. Once the home of Aixa, the mother of Boabdil, the last Moorish king of Granada, this mini palace offers breathtaking views and a glimpse into the city’s history.

  • Luxury Tip: Access to this palace is available through the Andalucían Monuments ticket. Our concierge can arrange for private, guided tours of the city’s historic sites, making sure you see the best of Granada without the hassle.
  1. Granada Cathedral & Capilla Real

For those interested in Spanish history, a visit to Granada Cathedral and the Capilla Real is a must. The cathedral, the first Renaissance church in Spain, is paired with the Royal Chapel, where Catholic Monarchs Isabel and Ferdinand are buried.

  1. Enjoy the Atmosphere of Plaza Bib Rambla

Though Granada lacks a traditional main square, Plaza Bib Rambla serves as the city’s lively heart. Once a venue for jousting and bullfights, the plaza is now filled with flower stalls, outdoor restaurants, and street performers, offering a slice of the local life.

  1. Shop for Unique Souvenirs

Granada’s artisan culture shines through in its traditional shops. From Moroccan-inspired spices and teas to handmade ceramics, there are plenty of luxury souvenirs to choose from.

  • What to Buy
    • Spices & Tea: Explore the Moroccan tea shops along Caldereria Nueva for an authentic taste of North Africa.
    • Ceramics: Pick up decorative ceramics with the classic pomegranate motif at Fajalauza.
    • Leather Goods: Shop exquisite handmade leather items at 5V Valverde, a store renowned for its quality.
  1. Explore Granada’s Water Architecture

Water is an integral part of Granada’s Moorish architecture. From ancient bathhouses to intricate fountains, exploring the city’s water culture is a fascinating experience. A tour can reveal the stories behind places like the Aljibe del Rey and Bañuelo.

  1. Discover the Rodriguez Acosta Foundation

Art and architecture lovers shouldn’t miss the Rodriguez Acosta Foundation, an artist’s residence built in the early 20th century. Its eclectic design and beautiful gardens make it a unique stop, especially for those looking for something off the beaten path.

  • Visit Tip: If you’re already visiting the Alhambra, tickets sometimes include entrance to this hidden treasure.
  1. Indulge in Flamenco at Sacromonte

Granada is synonymous with flamenco, and the Sacromonte neighbourhood is the best place to experience this authentic art form. This area, known for its cave houses and ‘Zambra’ style of flamenco, offers an intimate and raw performance experience.

  1. Head to the Miradores for Stunning Views

Granada’s skyline, dominated by the Alhambra, is best enjoyed from one of its many miradors (viewpoints). Mirador San Nicolas and Placeta Cristo Azucenas offer breathtaking panoramic views, especially at sunset when the city glows in golden hues.

  • Luxury Tip: Our concierge team can arrange a private champagne picnic at the viewpoint for a romantic or celebratory experience.
  1. Venture Beyond Granada: Day Trips and Activities

Granada’s surroundings are just as captivating as the city itself. Whether you’re interested in adventure sports or exploring quaint villages, there’s something for everyone:

  • Rio Verde: Go canyoning with a guide and discover the region’s natural beauty.
  • Las Alpujarras: Explore a collection of mountain villages and sample local specialities.
  • Skiing in Sierra Nevada: For winter sports enthusiasts, skiing is available just an hour from the city between the months of December and April.

Our team can organise day trips and activities tailored to your preferences, complete with luxury transport and expert guides. Should you wish to have a ski day in the Sierra Nevada mountains, we can arrange everything from transport to ski and lift passes and equipment rental.

Your Ultimate Guide

If you’re searching for thrilling cultural activities during your stay with us, a trip to the beautiful town of Ronda is an absolute must.

Located just over an hour from The Sanctuary Marbella, Ronda is set amidst spectacular scenery and is renowned for its iconic bridge that spans the breathtaking El Tajo gorge. This charming town not only offers fabulous restaurants and a wealth of historical sites but also boasts a fantastic wine scene. So grab your sunglasses and let’s go exploring!

The Top Must-Sees in Ronda

Whether you’re a history buff, a nature enthusiast, or a foodie, Ronda offers something for everyone. This stunning town is home to a blend of natural wonders, architectural marvels, and cultural landmarks. Here are the top must-see attractions that should be on your itinerary when visiting this picturesque Andalucían gem.

  1. El Tajo de Ronda

No trip to Ronda would be complete without witnessing the El Tajo, the gorge that divides the city into two parts: the ancient Moorish Old Town and the modern new town. The canyon and its surrounding valleys are best viewed from the Puente Nuevo, or New Bridge, a masterpiece of architecture that spans the Guadalevir river. El Tajo de Ronda is not only a natural wonder, but also a cultural and literary treasure, providing the inspiration for Ernest Hemingway’s novel ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’.

  1. The Old Town

If you want to discover the true vibe of Ronda, then visiting the Old City is a must. Known as La Ciudad, this part of the town extends south of the famous Puente Nuevo Bridge. Featuring cobbled streets, charming squares, and examples of Moorish architecture, this area is perfect for a morning of aimless wandering, taking in the sights.

  1. Plaza de Toros & Royal Cavalry of Ronda

Completed in 1785, Ronda’s bullring was declared a National Heritage Site in 1993. Known locally as the Real Maestranza de Caballería, it’s the oldest and one of the most attractive in Spain. This unique bullring offers a fascinating glimpse into Spain’s heritage of bullfighting and equestrian arts. Nowadays, the Plaza de Toros is mostly a museum and cultural centre, and it continues to house the Royal Riding School teaching professional dressage.

Best Viewpoints in Ronda

From dramatic gorges to historic bridges, the viewpoints in Ronda offer some of the most picturesque and awe-inspiring sights you’ll ever encounter. Whether you’re an avid photographer or simply someone who appreciates stunning scenery, these viewpoints are sure to leave you amazed.

  1. Mirador Puente Nuevo de Ronda New Bridge

For a truly unforgettable experience, take a short walk down a steep but well-paved path from Plaza de Maria to a viewpoint approximately halfway down the gorge, where you will be treated to incredible views of the bridge!

  1. Alameda del Tajo

Located next to the bullring, this 19th-century park culminates in a sheer drop (don’t worry, there are railings!). From here, you can enjoy expansive westward views of the neighbouring Grazalema Natural Park, the highest peaks of which are often snow-capped in winter.

  1. Puente Viejo

One of the two original and much lower crossings that Puente Nuevo was designed to replace, Ronda’s ‘Old Bridge’ dates from the early seventeenth century and offers views of the canyon and the rolling farmland south of the town.

  1. Jardines de Cuenca

Named after Cuenca, a hilltop town halfway between Madrid and Valencia with which Ronda is twinned, these gardens consist of a series of terraces pinned to the edge of the gorge. Follow them all the way down, lingering in the colourful rose garden on the way, and you’ll end up on Puente Viejo.

Ronda’s Wine Scene

Ronda is not just known for its scenic beauty and historical landmarks; it also boasts a thriving wine scene. The region’s vineyards are situated at high altitudes, between 600 and 900 meters above sea level, creating a unique microclimate that is ideal for growing high-quality grapes. This results in wines that are complex and balanced, with a perfect blend of acidity and structure.

Top Wineries to Visit in Ronda

  1. Bodega Garcia Hidalgo

Located in the lush Guadalcobacin Valley, Bodega Garcia Hidalgo is a boutique family-run winery managed by Miguel Garcia Pereila. The winery produces organic wines, including the strong and complex Alcoazin, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Merlot with aromas of ripe berries and mature tannins. Visitors can enjoy wine tastings with tapas, paella, and dessert, offering a delightful gastronomic experience.

  1. Bodega F. Schatz

Friedrich Schatz spearheaded the revival of winemaking in the Ronda mountains starting in 1982. The winery grows nine grape varieties, including Pinot Noir, Pinot Verdot, Moscatel Negro, Lemberger, and Chardonnay, producing elegant, fruity wines that are organic and biodynamic. Visits include a vineyard walk, cellar tour, and tasting of four to six wines.

  1. Bodega Descalzos Viejos

Housed in a restored 16th-century convent below the Ronda Gorge, Bodega Descalzos Viejos is one of Spain’s most unique wineries. It produces white and red wines, notably the DV Aires, a fresh and intense Garnacha and Petit Verdot blend, and the DV Iusta, a monovarietal Garnacha bursting with red fruit. 1. La Melonera

The project of Javier Suque and Ana de Castro, La Melonera aims to revive grape varieties lost during the 19th-century phylloxera plague. The winery uses native Blasco, Roma, and Melonera grapes. Their star wine, Payoya Negra, is a blend of Tintilla de Rota, Roma, and Shiraz, known for its creamy texture and berry aromas. Visits include a vineyard tour and tasting of three wines with tapas.
